All you need to know about the JEE Advanced Exam

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced is an entrance exam conducted annually in India for admission to undergraduate engineering programs at the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) which is renowned for its quality education and excellent career opportunities. It is considered as the second stage of the challenging engineering entrance exams in the country and requires a thorough understanding of concepts from subjects like physics, chemistry and mathematics. From the latest updates, the JEE Advanced 2024 will be a computer-based exam where students will be allowed to appear a maximum of 2 times in two consecutive years.

What is the exam pattern of JEE Advanced?

Understanding the exam pattern is crucial for students to prepare effectively. It is a highly competitive exam that tests the knowledge, skills, and aptitude of candidates in various subjects such as mathematics, physics, and chemistry. This examination goes beyond mere rote learning and encourages critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and analytical skills. The JEE Advanced exam is divided into two papers, Paper 1 and Paper 2.

Paper 1 consists of three sections: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Each section carries equal weightage. The questions in Paper 1 are further divided into multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and numerical answer type questions (NAT).

Paper 2, similar to Paper 1, also consists of three sections: Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The pattern and weightage of the sections remain the same as Paper 1. However, the types of questions may vary, including questions that require comprehension, matching, and assertion-reasoning.

One notable aspect of the JEE Advanced exam is the presence of negative marking. For every incorrect answer in the MCQs, candidates will be penalized with negative marks. However, there is no negative marking for unanswered questions or numerical answer type questions.

Who are eligible candidates?

The JEE Advanced Registration begins from May month tentatively. To be eligible, a candidate must first qualify the JEE Main exam. Only the top 250000 rank holders in JEE Main are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced. Candidates must have passed their Class 12 board examination or any equivalent qualifying examination in the preceding year of the JEE Advanced exam. Candidates must have studied Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as compulsory subjects in their 10+2 or equivalent qualifying examination. They should have been born on or after October 1, 1999.There is a relaxation of 5 years for candidates belonging to SC, ST and PWD categories (i.e candidates born on or after October 1 1994 are eligible). It is also important to know that students have not taken prior admission to an IIT.
