IGCSE Class 9 Syllabus

The IGCSE syllabus is administered by the Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE). In the IGCSE Class 9, students need to study a wide range of subjects that are quite exciting and challenging. The syllabus focuses on building skills like creative thinking, enquiry & problem-solving. The IGCSE syllabus is experiential and holistic in nature which ensures that students are well- prepared for the pre-university exams.

IGCSE Class 9 Syllabus for All Subjects

The IGCSE syllabus for Class 9 is grouped into five categories:

Group 1 (Compulsory): First language English, Foreign language (French/Spanish) or Second language (Hindi)

Group 2 (Mandatory): World literature, Global perspectives, Geography/History

Group 3 (Any 1): Physics, Chemistry, Biology (all 3) or coordinated sciences

Group 4: International Mathematics, Additional Mathematics (optional)

Group 5 (Creative, technical & vocational): Art & Design, Business Studies, Computer Science, Drama, Physical Education (optional)

Students need to select 10 subjects in Class 9. They need to study English, French/Spanish or Hindi from Group 1, World literature & global perspectives from Group 2 & International Mathematics from Group 4. If they choose Physics, Chemistry & Biology from Group 3, they need to choose a subject from Group 2 (History/Geography) and 5. Also, they may choose two subjects from Sciences so that they are able to opt for History or Geography.

Additionally, students need to choose from a range of sporting or non-sporting activities.

Economics: The IGCSE Class 9 syllabus covers topics like the nature of economic problem, factors of production, opportunity cost, PPC curves, demand, supply, price determination, elasticity of demand/supply, market economic system, mixed economy, market structure, money & banking, households, workers, trade unions, firms & production, households, fiscal policy, monetary policy, supply-side policy, inflation & deflation, poverty, population, foreign exchange rates, free trade & protection, etc.

English Language: The Class 9 syllabus for the IGCSE board includes topics like travel & sport, work & education, people & society, ideas & technology, directed writing, composition, listening & speaking.

English Literature: The IGCSE Class 9 syllabus focuses on poetry, prose & drama and enhancing writing skills.

History: Various topics including the First World War, Peace Treaties of 1919-1923, League of Nations, big picture of 20th century, Cold War, USA containing spread of communism, USSR’s control over Eastern Europe (1948-1989), events in Gulf from 1970-2000, the First World War (1914-18), Germany (1914-45), Russia (1905-41) & US (1919-41) have been covered.

Geography: The IGCSE syllabus covers important topics like increase in world population, over-population & under population, causes of change in population size, population policies, population migration, factors affecting population density, settlement patterns, settlement hierarchy, use of urban land, urban problems & solutions, rapid urban growth, tectonic plates, impacts of urban growth, types & features of earthquakes & volcanoes, rivers & drainage basins, managing floods, coastal landforms - creation & deposition, coral reefs, weather and climate data use, equatorial climate, tropical rainforest ecosystems, deforestation, desert ecosystems, indicators of development, identifying inequalities, conserving natural resources, water management, nuclear power, agricultural systems, globalisation, etc.

Biology: The IGCSE Class 9 syllabus includes topics like cells, movement in and out of cells, chemicals of life, enzymes, plant nutrition, animal nutrition, transport in plants or animals, pathogens & immunity, respiration process, excretion, coordination & response, homeostasis, drugs, reproduction in plants/humans, inheritance, variation & natural selection, organisms & their environment, humans & the environment & biotechnology.

Business Studies: Various topics including classification of businesses, types of business organisation, business objectives & stakeholder objectives, organisation & business management, recruitment, selection & training of employees, internal & external communication, market research, marketing mix, marketing strategy, operations management, business finance, economic issues, environmental & ethical issues, etc. are covered in the syllabus.
