Class 9 is a significant turning point in a student’s life. It will form the base for the Class 90 board exams. At this stage, students will be introduced to fundamental principles that will help them to prepare for competitive exams like IIT-JEE, NEET, CUET, etc. Hence, the ICSE syllabus for class 9th introduces various themes and ideas that will help students to perform better in later stages.
The ICSE syllabus for class 9 includes significant subjects. The syllabus is divided into three groups:
Group I: English, second languages, History, Civics, and Geography
Group II: Computer Science, Agricultural Science, Environmental Science, Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology), Mathematics, Economics, Commercial Studies, Technical Drawing & Modern Foreign Language
Students can choose any two subjects from the Group II.
Group III: Fashion Designing, Performing Arts, Art, Environmental Applications, Computer Applications, Physical Education, Economic Applications, Home Sciences, Technical Drawing Applications, Modern Foreign Language, Commercial Applications, Yoga & Cookery
Students need to pick one subject from Group III.
English : In English, topics like note-making, reflective composition, report writing, writing stories, the sequence of tenses, notices, emails, letters, literary devices, auxiliaries, etc. are covered with other fundamentals of grammar.
Mathematics : Topics like rational and irrational numbers, rationalization of surds, compound interest, linear equations in two variables, logarithms, indices/exponents, mean, median and mode, trigonometry, mensuration, Cartesian plane are covered in the ICSE syllabus.
Physics : The ICSE syllabus covers topics like scalar and vector quantities, laws of motion, gravitation, Archimedes’ principle, concepts of heat & temperature, reflection, nature of sound waves, electricity circuits, etc.
Chemistry : Varied topics like soft & hard water, drying & dehydrating agents, covalent bonding, electrovalent bonding, structure of an atom, the periodic table, oxidation & reduction reactions, industrial manufacture of hydrogen, global warming, acid rain, ozone depletion, etc.
History & Civics : Major topics like fundamental rights & duties, directive principles, features of Indian Constitution, welfare state, mid-term election & by-election, composition of Election Commission, direct & indirect election, three-tier system of governance are covered in civics. In History, students need to learn about the Harappan Civilization, the Vedic period, Tripitikas, Angas & Jatakas, the Mauryan Empire, Ashoka’s Dharma, the Sangam Age, the Gupta dynasty, establishment of Nalanda University, The Delhi Sultanate, The Cholas, The Mughal Empire, Renaissance & Industrial Revolution.
Computer Studies : The ICSE syllabus for Computer Studies covers topics related to JAVA programming, operators in JAVA, definitions of loop, ethical issues of computing, etc.
Economics : Various topics like meaning and definition of economics, three major problems of an economy, main sectors of Indian economy, social infrastructure, consumer behaviour, consumer rights, Right to Information, Consumer’s Protection Act, globalisation, etc. are covered.
